Abstract
fter a very brief introduction into optical fiber communications and
differences between single mode and multimode fibers I will describe main
characteristics, typical profiles, and optical properties of multimode fibers.
Then we will discuss main definitions and deduct approximations, discuss in
details what profile features define bandwidth and bendloss, and how to
measure bandwidth.
Refreshments will be served at 4:15 PM.

About the Colloquia
This series of colloquia is related to the research activities of the Computational Materials Science Center. Recent topics of interest in computational approaches in condensed matter, physical chemistry, informatics, and nanoscience are presented weekly by speakers both internal and external to Mason. This activity is part of the Computational Materials and Physical Chemistry Sciences and Computational Physics components of the doctoral program in Computational Sciences and Informatics. Students interested in obtaining one credit for their attendance can register in CSI 898-001.
By inviting colleagues to present their research we contribute to tearing down walls that isolate us (a strongly, locally focused institution) from the broader scientific community. This colloquium series is of tremendous benefit to the students who are exposed to the latest creative ideas in computational sciences, engineering, data, and physics. Any research program needs to be nurtured and constantly stimulated.
Seminars are held on Mondays at 4:30 PM in Exploratory Hall, room 3301 except as noted. Coffee and refreshments are served when funds are available.
Graduation Fair: all your graduation needs in one place.
Don’t forget to visit the Commencement Fair as well in the Fairfax Campus Bookstore – same time. This is an opportunity to purchase your cap and gown, pick up your Commencement tickets and purchase diploma covers/announcements all at the same time.
Graduation Fair helps you solve this key question: Where do I get my cap and gown?
Bachelor’s and Master’s Candidates
Bachelor’s and master’s candidates may purchase caps, gowns, announcements and pick-up commencement tickets at the Commencement Fair, March 3, 4, 5, in Dewberry Hall in the Johnson Center on the Fairfax Campus. The contact phone number for the University Bookstore in the Johnson Center is (703) 993-2666.
Master’s candidates must also wear a master’s hood. Please state your field of study when purchasing your hood as different colors denote different fields of study.
PhD Candidates
Doctoral candidates should order regalia through the University Bookstore as soon as possible to avoid late delivery fees. The Bookstore will begin taking orders on March 3rd, late orders (after April 1st) will be charged a $25 late fee in order to cover the cost of express shipping. Contact number is (703) 993-2666.

Join the bi-monthly luncheon series dedicated to the professional development and mentoring of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics at George Mason University. The series welcomes faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate, and undergraduate students to discuss topics relevant to the gender gap and gender biases in science.
Other topics will include building your CV (resume), completing academic job applications, science communication, time management, and the use of technology and innovation in science. The series invites new topics and learning opportunities, so please feel free to reach out with ideas for future meetings. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch for the meeting hour.
