GMU PhD Student Raquel Adams a finalist in Biophysical Society of Art Image Contest

Congratulations to Raquel Adams, GMU PhD student in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology with Dr. Saleet Jafri, who is one of 11 finalists in the Biophysical Society of Art Image Contest.

Ms. Adams helped create a semi-automated method of creating 3D reconstructions of serial electron micrograph images.  Electron micrographs are very grainy images, with different image quality in different parts of the image and thus are typically traced by hand which can be very labor intensive and time consuming.  The automated method is a major advance both in image quality and speed of reconstruction of the 3D image. Their collaborators are Carmen Manella and Jonathan Lederer of the Center for Biomedical Engineering and Technology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
