Dean Peggy Agouris is pleased to announce the re-establishment of the Department of Computational and Data Sciences and the Department of Physics and Astronomy as independent departments in the College of Science. These two departments had been acting as the School of Physics, Astronomy, and Computational Sciences for several years, and this reorganization will allow them to separately build on their strengths and reputations in a changing academic environment. During the 2015 Alumni Weekend, from October 16 – 19, the College of Science alumni chapter will host an event titled Science of Beer. Join the alumni chapter leadership and your friends and fellow alumni/ae at the event to learn about the science behind beer from special guests, and get a taste from a local brewery. Friday night, May 1st, was the culminating event for the College of Science’s inaugural Science Slam scholarship competition: the Grand Slam. During the event, held in the Johnson Center Atrium, six student researchers gave rousing and often comedic presentations about their research to a lay audience of over 130 in a battle for a $2000 scholarship prize.
The Science Slam competition events allow “students, faculty, and alumni to mingle and learn about the great research being conducted by students in the College of Science” said Kerone Wetter, the advisor of the GMU Science Slam student organization. The student organization is responsible for the logistics of the competition, additional outreach activities, and general body meeting support. (more…)
