An operational monitoring program of land resources requires four basic
elements: administrative mandate, specifics for reporting, data collection
efforts, and analytical and assessment capabilities. In this presentation,
I will discuss history and current status of forest monitoring by the
Forest Service, challenges and opportunities, and the use of remote sensing
to develop a more efficience, effective, and comprehensive forest
monitoring effort.
