Geography

The Department of Geography at George Mason University has been offering courses since 1984 and continues to provide an excellent opportunity for students to advance their geographic skills in cartography and visualization, remote sensing, and geographic information systems—all highly sought career applications, especially in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. Courses in Human, Physical and Regional Geography, and Geographic Information Systems, form the background for the B.A. and B.S. degrees. A minor in Geographic Information Science is also offered. The M.S. degree in Geographic and Cartographic Science includes courses in advanced cartography, applied geographic information systems, remote sensing, spatial modeling, and quantitative methods. The M.S. degree prepares students for further study as well as for a variety of careers in geography and the spatial sciences with government agencies or private corporations. A graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science is also offered. Graduate assistantships and fellowships are available to suitably qualified students.
