Earth Systems and Geoinformation Sciences

The ESGS Department in the College of Science (COS) is an interdisciplinary academic unit, with research and education emphases on the physical science aspects of the Earth (Earth Systems Science), and the science of the tools facilitating a better understanding of the physical earth and the human dimension (GeoInformation Science). Specifically, Earth systems encompass the study of atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere, including their interrelationships and interactions with the biosphere and the environment. To study these aspects of the Earth, the Department emphasizes the use of powerful scientific tools to observe, quantify, and analyze the Earth and its various phenomena resulting from physical and human processes at multiple geographical scales.
