Message from Dean Chandhoke

 The College of Science (COS) is central to basic and applied science at George Mason University. COS is committed to enhancing the college’s strength in computational, theoretical, and experimental sciences by promoting excellence in academic and research programs. The College promotes diversity, and recruits the brightest faculty, students, and staff to create a vibrant and dynamic environment of learning and inquiry. The College enhances the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of the University by responding to the needs of the community and creating spires of excellence. COS offers unique opportunities for academic and research collaborations across the university, region, nation and the world. Our approach to science education is centered around the sharing and cultivation of critical thinking, curiosity, skills, and commitment to the advancement of knowledge. To inculcate the spirit of discovery in students, the College of Science offers new cross- and inter-disciplinary academic programs both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our faculty members use novel pedagogical approaches to challenge and prepare students to become independent and creative members of the scientific community and the society. The College of Science is also strongly committed to transforming science education at the pre-college level through collaborative educational programs undertaken with area schools. The College’s faculty advances and expands emerging scientific frontiers of knowledge using fundamental and multi-disciplinary research programs. Through cutting edge research, our faculty members address the most challenging scientific questions. The body of knowledge generated through these discoveries results in creation of new scientific foundations and future inventions. By translating their results into technologies, our faculty serve society and foster new industry. Being committed to maximizing student participation in all aspects of scientific progress, the College creates dynamic opportunities with direct involvement in the research process for undergraduate and graduate students.
