Summer 2008: Apprenticeship Program
Do you have an innovative idea?
Consider an apprenticeship!
Student Academic Affairs & Advising offers undergraduate students a
chance to apprentice with faculty mentors.
Students are involved in:
- Collaborative work on a specified scholarly project (about 10 hours per week)
- Periodic meetings with other Apprentices
- Learning to present their work to a variety of audiences
- Presentation of findings in the GMU media or at conferences.
Students work with their chosen advisor who will assist them with the project by giving feedback, meeting with the student regularly, and providing guidance and help on various portions of the research. Students receive an award of $1000 (before taxes) if selected for the program. An additional allowance of $100 is also awarded for the student to use on project-related expenses, such as conference registration fees, production of a presentation poster, costume materials, or access to primary resources.
Students and faculty members from all disciplines are encouraged to apply
Applicants must be current and continuing undergraduates (3.0 GPA or above at the deadline) and prepare a brief proposal detailing the intended project with additional information on a web-based application form. Selected apprentices then meet monthly to focus on communications skills. Both the faculty member and the student submit an application to participate. It is expected that the student has an ongoing project guided by a mentor or has had prior experience in research methods. We encourage eligible individuals from diverse or underrepresented backgrounds to apply.
