Overview
The College of Science, founded July 1, 2006, plays the central role in undergraduate and graduate education and research in the physical, biological, mathematical, and computational sciences at George Mason University. The mission of the College is to serve the local community and the nation by providing world-class scientific leadership in a wide variety of areas important to modern society, including bioscience, climate change, geoscience, physics, space science, mathematics, and computational science. The College offers many degree programs of interest to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a number of accelerated bachelor's/master's combination programs. All students (both graduates and undergraduates) are encouraged to take advantage of the many available research opportunities.Fast Facts
In the 2006-07 academic year 2,509 Mason students were enrolled in the 42 College of Science degree and certificate programs, including 1,627 undergraduate science majors and 882 graduate students. Full-time students comprise about 59% of the college's student body, which is 51% female and 32% minority, with an average age of 27. A total of 275 faculty members contribute to the College of Science mission of research and education. In 2006, the faculty produced a total of 220 refereed publications and received over 20 million dollars in external research funding, far exceeding all other Mason colleges and institutes.
